Capture in FCP 7 and Edit in FCP 6?
Posted by Andrea Stewart on April 5, 2010 at 3:43 pmThis has probably been asked, but I can’t find the answer.
Can I capture on an FCP 7 system (in an FCP 6 friendly codec) and then edit on a system that has FCP 6?

April 5, 2010 at 4:02 pmSure can… just create a new project file in 6 and import the captured files to it.

The system I’ll be capturing on doesn’t have FCP 6. Do I need to have the facility with the FCP 6 system create the project file, then open that project file in FCP 7 when I want to log and capture?
I guess the real question is once the media is captured is it JUST media that can be imported into any other edit? As long as its in a readable codec?

Just use the FCP 7 system to capture with. It will have a project file associated with it, but you won’t use it. You’ll just take the media files captured on that system to the FCP 6 system, and import them in a newly created project file. The captured QT movies are not actually part of a project file, they are imported into them as reference clips. All you need to do is capture, take the captured media to the FCP 6 system, and import the files in an FCP 6 project file.
