I’m having a troubling capture issue. I’ll select [capture now] and rather than the viewer window popping up with the video that i’m capturing, the window comes up blank/black with the prompt in the bottom dialogue box saying ‘allocating disk space.’ Within a second or so video will appear and then in the next instant the video will freeze. At this point FCP will not respond to any commands and I’ll have to ‘force quit.’ The odd thing too is that I’ll check my ‘capture scratch’ folder and a quicktime file will have been produced from the capture attempt that is nearly 7GB in size. I am baffled as to how this could be since the capture attempt only lasted a second or two. i’ve been using FCP for about two years now and I’ve never seen anything like this. Just before this started to happen I had successfully captured a clip yet now I can’t capture anything without this ‘meltdown’ happening. there’s still nearly 35GB of free space on my hard drive so I don’t see how space limitations would be an issue. Thank you very much to anyone that might be able to offer up some solutions/ trouble shooting tactics.

This has come up on this forum at various times.

The solution is to not use Capture NOW, but set an In and Out point and Capture CLIP.
You can also screen your footage and pre-mark as many “good” clips as you like then BATCH Capture them in one shot.
This is a better way to save drive space as well.
