Capture DVCPro50 footage in HDV Format
I am using 2 camera formats (HDV and DVCPro 50) for a live concert and will be using multi-clip function to edit them. However, I need to standardise a SINGLE format for multi clip edit to work.
So, my question is:
1) Could I digitise a DVCPro 50 tape by using a HDV preset capture? In another word, I am enlarging the DVCPro 50 – 720*520 to 1440*1080. This is the keep my project all in HDV format.
2) In this way, does my DVCPro 50 footage looks pixelated?
3) Alternatively, is there another work flow that is better solution than mine?

This is an excellent question. Maybe we can get something started. First off, I’m assuming your DV50 is anamorphic 16:9 – am I right? Answer to question 1 is that you can’t transcode on the fly during capture over FireWire. The only way to do that is through a capture device such as a Kona or Blackmagic.Your goal here should be to get to one format AND that format should be an optimal one for multiclip editing in FCP. DV50 would be good for that, but you’d be taking everything down to SD resolution. HDV is probably not the best choice. So what you need is to get both sources to uncompressed, ProRes, or DVCProHD. I don’t have a capture card that can upconvert, so I defer at this point to those who do. Anybody?

This is not what you want to do. HDV will degrade your DVCPro 50 image as it’s a long GOP format.
You want to either work in ProRes HD or DVCPro HD. I like DVCPro HD myself. With an AJA Kona board you can capture everything in to DVCPro HD or ProRes and then you’re set to edit.
Be sure to investigate Multi Clip editing on this forum as you MUST have perfectly matched timecode for it to work easily. If not, there are other workarounds, but there have been some very good discussions on this of late here on the forum.
