The best is AJA Kona boards. More realtime features than pretty much anybody out there. Cost more, but great quality and great support. And the Kona LHi is incredible for the price.
I also hear really good things about the Matrox MXO 2 but we don’t run them here, only the Kona 3’s.

MBP or MP?
If you are like me that started with a MacPro then added a MacBookPro the Matrox MXO2 is the only way to go.
I don’t know what you need as I/O but the MXO2 is sure to have everything you are looking for…
The MXO2 has been great, the Matrox support team was fantastic (I needed to call them to find out my problem was between the keyboard and my chair 🙂An Artist At Heart.

August 28, 2009 at 2:38 amI was shown online the Red Rocket card by a friend last weekend. Do yourself a favour and check the specs at the Red site.
Although not really available yet and probably needing a breakout box that is yet to be speced, it looks really interesting, particularly if you are looking for a setup that will see a lot of Red codec.
And, it is claimed to play 4k. The Kona may have a serious competitor but it is very early days.

It’s not available, not in use, so we should just wait for it and then put it into our systems? Going on theory and specs is nothing like going with the tried a proven. There are three very good companies out there that you can purchase and run today.
Red Rocket is something for the future, but unless you want to wait for it and you plan to run predominately RED footage it’s not a viable option right now.

I really hate to be the one to breakup the party, but as I type this, I’m compressing footage on a RED Rocket system. It is available and is definitely in use. It rocks for RED footage. But…..
It’s completely different than a capture card. It’s currently only compatible with one program provided by RED. It is used for two purposes currently. First is to accelerate rendering of RED files and second is to play RED files out at any frame size up to 4K. We don’t have a 4K monitor, so we’re stuck with 2K and 1080P. The footage is quite breathtaking.
The RED Rocket does not work to capture footage. It isn’t compatible with FCP. It could possible be compatible with footage other than RED in FCP in the future, but it’s not likely in my opinion. I’m not parting with any of our AJA cards any time soon.
Walter’s point is that AJA is a proven card and an industry standard. It’s really great stuff.

August 28, 2009 at 3:24 amWhich is why I said it wasn’t available yet. I was recommending people look at it as it is a really interesting development.
I am specing my new system and am leaning towards Kona3 as I may not wait for any cards currently in development. However, I may also just keep running my Decklink if I think Red Rocket is worth waiting for.
Either way check it out and be informed before you buy.

It does play 4K, but it is no match for a Kona. The Red Rocket does not work currently with any other apps, nor any other kind of content, it does not have deck control, audio or timecode out. But if you are creating and processing REDCode files there is nothing better except Scratch.
The RedRocket currently is limited to just outputting content from RocketCineX it is not currently capable as an add on tool to any NLE or any Non- Red workflow elements. The Red Rocket can output Single and Dual link HDSDI, currently only as YCrCb at 8 or 12 bits (10 bit video is coming) and 8bit RGB.
The 2 – Dual DVI ports together can be bonded to the appropriate projection (I believe that currently it is Sony SXRD projectors only) to deliver a true 4K image with color correction in real time.
