    Hi –
This was discussed a long time ago, and I don’t know if there are any NEW answers. For those users who DO NOT have Final Cut Pro, but simply want to grab 5 seconds of video from a VTR (with RS422 control) so they can manipulate the video with After Effects and Photoshop, and then output it thru a Kona LS, etc. – what applications are out there to do this. This is perhaps the only thing that Blackmagic offers as a give away, that AJA does not. Are there any MAC OS-X applications to do this besides FCP ?

(just a quick disclaimer – the facility has 4 seats of FCP Studio with Kona 2 boards, and 2 MAC laptops with FCP Studio as well, and the one graphics system – It’s illegal to simply make a copy for the graphics station with the Kona LS in it, and even if you didnt’ care morally, FCP will see the identical serial # on the graphics MAC with the “duplicate” serial #, and it won’t launch).

    Any ideas would be appreciated.

I think you can capture video through QuicktimePro now. No need to buy third party apps…as long as it works with the hardware and not just firewire. Just a guess on my part…haven’t tried it.

    Bob,

NOt sure if this will work but Aurora actually makes a little app like this and it’s designed to do exactly what you are asking. It’s called Aurora media grab and you can download it from this page.

It’s a fast and dirty media grab app. Not sure it will recognize or play nicely with the KONA 2.

On the same page there is a little app called HACK TV CARBON. That one works in OSX and I think it sees the KONA as well.

I am not at liberty to say more than something which fit your needs will one day be available from your favorite video card manufacturer.

That’s all I can say for now.

Now that sounds like a beta user NDA if I ever did hear one. GREAT! Some users need a little app like this.

    David,

No I am not a beta user or under any NDA. Just overheard some good news on something in the works for the future.

Hack TV Carbon works great with KONA; what’s more, you can feed the KONA live video, run Hack TV Carbon, then just do an apple+C to do a frame grab and paste into PS or whatever you’re using. No need to actually record a clip with Hack TV — just set the monitor size to the size of the clip you want to grab.

MUCH easier than the “digitize a clip in FCP and export a still frame” method I’d been using.
