Captions – duration
Posted by Sil Bia on October 29, 2012 at 12:02 pmHi all
I need to edit some captions on a documentary for cinema / tv distribution.
I am now wondering if there is any standard about the lenght of captions; of course every caption needs to stay on sceen the necessary time to be read, but I wonder if there is any general standard / rule that I should follow.Any suggestion is welcome.

October 29, 2012 at 5:37 pmOh no, it’s about interview captions (lower thirds), whith name and title of the interviewee. I guess for that reaidng time x 2 will be fine. Thanks all!

October 29, 2012 at 6:09 pmLOWER THIRDS! That’s different. Typically 4-5 seconds, no less than 2. We thought you were talking about subtitles…words on the screen over what people are saying, so you can understand what they are saying if they are speaking a different language or if the audio is somehow inaudible. That rule of thumb is 2x read through.

October 30, 2012 at 2:26 amYes, for Lower Thirds I do leave them 5 seconds. 6 seconds if they have fade in-fade out.

November 1, 2012 at 10:32 amYea, I’ll keep them about 7″, as we have lots of infos on screen (subtitles too). Thank you all 🙂 !
