The DV footage I’m cutting looks fine in the Viewer and renders fine, but in the Canvas, the image widens and skews to the right as it is displaying 720×480 aligned left with the pixels beyond 640×480 going off the Canvas screen to the right. The Canvas image centers and squeezes to 4:3 when I superimpose material from Live Type only for the duration of the superimposition. I have all preferences and settings set to DV. It bugs me a lot. Anybody have any fixes? I’m using FCP 5.1.4 on an Intel Mac Mini with 512Mb Ram.

Is the material you’re working with DV? Can you post a screen shot of what you’re seeing?

Is your Canvas set to fit to window?

It is DV fit to window. The material is DV converted from an older file captured at 640×480 on my older nonlinear using a Targa 2000 card and Premiere on a Nubus Mac. I’ve found that all other software shows the converted DV videofile format data to be DV with 720×480 pixels. But in Item Properties in FCP, it says Frame Size is 640×480 and pixel aspect is square (it’s not supposed to). Everything else handles as if it’s DV in realtime and renders out fine at 4:3, including still frames. So I can’t tell which pixel aspect these converted DV files actually are.

I think these converted DV files are 640X480. I found the solution for the Canvas distortion is to open the file in Quicktime, open Movie Properties, set the Scaled Size to 720X480 in the Video Track Visual Settings section, then Save the change, then Import into FCP. I appreciate your input. It made me look into it a little more.
