Can’t view iPhone video in Vegas
Posted by Don Smith on July 5, 2010 at 4:25 pmSo I finally got an iPhone 4, very pleased with the hi def video camera. However, when I drag the quicktime file in Vegas 8c, only the audio comes through and the video is black. Tried opening in Quicktime and the video looks fantastic, but how can I get this on a Vegas timeline so I can edit and convert to mpeg2 or back to iPhone format?

July 5, 2010 at 5:00 pmWhen you open the file in Quicktime, what codec does it say it’s using. Use Ctrl+I to open the inspector and see. Usually when you get video without audio it’s a video codec issue.

July 5, 2010 at 5:08 pmIt’s a .mov file and it reads Format: H.264, 1280 X 720, Millions.
Movie FPS : 29.97. Looks great in Quick Time, but I’m a PC guy and want to view in Windows Media Player and definitely want to be able to edit those iPhone videos I take. -

July 5, 2010 at 5:12 pmJohn will correct me if I’m wrong but I believe that you need QuickTime 7.6.4 (or is it 7.6.2) on your computer – nothing newer.

July 5, 2010 at 5:31 pmYou can find most older versions of QuickTime on the Avid site.

July 5, 2010 at 5:37 pmI think I recall reading this somewhere else. Somehow, Vegas doesn’t like the most recent Quicktime? Anyway, it forces you to download the latest version when you update iTunes in order to accomodate the new iPhone 4.
So, if that actually IS a fix for this issue, would I just go to the Avid site and download that version, and it would over ride the most recent one? Or do I need to uninstall QT and then download the older version?

July 5, 2010 at 5:41 pmYou’ll need to uninstall whatever version you currently have on your machine and then install either 7.6.2 or 7.6.4
Pro 9 had a patch for this problem but Pro 8 is stuck with having to use an older version.
I can verify that 7.6.4 works with the latest iTunes but can’t speak for the iPhone.
If it has to see the current version of QT, then you have to decide what’s more important, Vegas or your iPhone 🙁 -

July 5, 2010 at 5:50 pmGuess I’ll give that a shot. Hmmmm, choose between Vegas and my new iPhone 4?? That’s a tough one 😉

That was true but now Vegas Pro 9.0e works fine with the latest Quicktime. The problem is that you’re still on Vegas Pro 8.0.
Anyway, it forces you to download the latest version when you update iTunes in order to accommodate the new iPhone 4.
If it’s what Mike is thinking (and I bet it is) you may be out of luck. You can try and uninstall Quicktime and find a copy of Quicktime 7.6.4 and install that (I believe that was the last version to work properly otherwise 7.6.2 definitely works), but I’ll bet you will loose the ability to use your iPhone 4 with iTunes. It’s worth a try though.
If not, you just found your reason to upgrade to Vegas Pro 9. You can’t expect a two year old NLE to work with the latest formats.

July 5, 2010 at 6:02 pmHmmmmm. I’ve held off on upgrading to 9 because I really didn’t see a need for it, 8c works great for everthing I need. Plus I’ve read about some of the bugs people have been reporting. I’ve always gone by the “if it ain’t broke…” philosophy. So maybe now it’s “broke”.
I’m way past the discount for upgrading to 9. Any deals on an upgrade? I think maybe I’ll bit the bullet now.

July 5, 2010 at 7:17 pmDon, rather than upgrade to Pro 9, you may want to consider a “lateral” move to the recently announced Movie Studio HD Platinum ($95) or Movie Studio HD Platinum Production Suite ($125).
You’re limited to 10 tracks (formerly 4) of audio and video.
I’m sure there are other features that aren’t in Vegas Pro but you’d have to take a closer look to find out what they are and whether the lack of them (for example, no scripts) is a deal breaker or not.
