  • Can’t use HDV captured in FCP on a PC

    Hi everybody,

Well, the day is finally here where I’m working my first project in HDV, and I’ve hit a snag. I captured the video, shot on the new sony HDV camera on Final Cut. When I transfered the video to a PC, where I planned to use it in After Effects, I found the video would not run.

It looks like the codec used by Final cut and Quicktime on the mac (HDV1080i/25) is not available for windows. I am running Quicktime 7 pro on my PC, but still no dice.

I figure I’m going to have to convert to a lossless format, then import to AE, then export to a lossless format, and back to HDV. This is a definite solution, but I’m wondering if anybody has a better idea.

    Thanks,

    RE

Is your final output definately going to be HDV?

If so that will definately effect overall quality of your footage because it will be recompressing to HDV any work that you do involving the footage.

In my experience the best solution with HDV is to first run it through magic bullet to convert the footage to 24p or (25p if you need to keep it 25fps). This will give you a full frame to work with. Also magic bullet has a great de-artifacting feaure for video sources that really helps the overall look of the footage. This is not a quick process however so I would not recommend converting the footage until you have your selects done. You are also correct in your statement about HDV from Final Cut on a PC. The footage, much like the DVCProHD codec used for varicam, doesn’t work on the PC. So the best bet for you is to use AE on MAC to do the conversion.

I think you will be pleased with the look that Magic bullet will give you and they also have the look suite included for some film-like color timings for the footage. We then used the Black Magic HD codec for viewing and working withit on the PC which worked great for us.
