  • Can’t undo markers in source window in FCP 7?

Posted by Aaron Fisher-cohen on July 19, 2010 at 7:03 pm

So I’m playing around with the new markers in FCP 7 and there’s something weird going on. They act fine in the timeline and the canvas window, but when I insert a marker in the source window, I can’t undo it.

Starting from scratch, I have no undo levels (it’s grayed out). If I put down a marker in the source window, the edit menu acts as if I now have something to undo (it turns black). But when I either use the menu or just hit cmd+z, nothing happens. it becomes grayed out again, but the marker stays. Anybody else experience this?

The reiterate, this only happens in the source window, not in the timeline.

Not seeing that problem. What’s the media?

Ok, this is very strange. I did some more messing around and it seems to only be affecting one project. This is SD footage shot years ago and captured with an SD video camera (can’t remember more details, it was a while ago). Other projects I have, both SD and HD are not exhibiting this problem. It’s not a huge deal since now I know it’s isolated, but it’s still very strange.

Ok, one more thing now. In the affected project, if I choose a clip, reveal in finder, and drag said clip into the browser again, it works properly. Could the master clips have become corrupted somehow?

No, if the media itself was corrupted it would be in every clip made from it. Not that it matters much now you’ve fixed it, but what’s the codec this was digitized in, Motion JPEG or something proprietary?

It was brought in straight as DV footage. DV/DVCPro NTSC.

Did you use FCP7 to capture it or was it captured years ago as well?

No, this would have been back around 2002 or so. Version 4 or 4.5 maybe? Maybe even 3.

That’s old and captured on a different version of FCP/QT and before the new marker system was introduced.

Was the project upgraded from v3 (or 4 or 4.5) or started afresh with FCP7?

The project has been updated several times I’m sure, as new versions have come out. I just tried creating a new project and copying the master clips and sequences over but the behavior was still the same.

The only thing I’ve found so far that fixes it is to actually drag the media files from the finder into the browser. That’s not a full fix though, because even if I do that, the sequence clips will still be associated with the old master clips, not the new ones.

I’m not exactly sure what it going on, but I’d bet that is has to do with the ‘old’ media. If you can, try recapturing just one clip and see if it fixes the problem.
