Can’t stay on “leave files in place.”
When importing media, (add to an existing event) I select a file and FCP bounces from “leave files in place” to “copy to library”. Why? How do I prevent this? TIA.

There are two places to specify this preference. One is the Import Window (Cmd-i) which acts as such ONLY when using the Import Window. The second place is in Settings, which ONLY acts on items imported via drag-and-drop.

What kind of media are you importing? Some camera format need to be rewrapped, and FCPX won’t allow a direct import via the import window as it will want to rewrap.

OH, AND FCPX won’t let you “leave in place” if it thinks the files are on a camera card, they’ll copy to the library anyway.
