  • Can’t see veg files from V7 in V8

Posted by Geoffrey Mee on November 27, 2007 at 8:09 am

Just get real and installed Vegas Pro 8 but cant get Vegas 7e veg files to display on the timeline.
AVI files created from V7 are ok but not the Veg.
If I save an avi in V8 as a veg it will thereafter display.

From the two recent ones I tried to open, here are the error messages….

“An error occurred while CREATING the media file Tv showreel veg.sfap0.
Some streams could not be opened.”

and from another 7e based veg-
“An error occurred while LOADING the project file Ind Master.veg
The COM object failed to initialize.”

    Any ideas- thx

Forget to mention – have just moved over to XP [yes, just moved]
and the XP operating system is on a new drive. The Win2k system is intact on another drive which is where all the V7e editing occured in the past.

I had similar errors when I upgraded fron Vegas 6 to 8. My errors were from the “Media Generated” media. I went into Vegas 6 and removed them, saved and quit. Opened them up in Vegas 8. Bit of a schlep but it was the only way.

    Thx for the reply DigitO
Bit confused here…if I delete the Media Generated stuff in SV7, which happens to be text, wont I have to remake it in Pro8?
And if I delete it in 7 it’s gone forever right?

The new text generator in v8 – does that mean text created in earlier versions of vegas are not compatable in 8?
    What am I missing here.
    Thx

The text generator in Vegas 7 is still in Vegas 8. To open a Vegas 7 project in Vegas 8, you should just choose File – Open and pick the Vegas 7 VEG file. It should simply open.

In your case, it sounds like you’re dragging it to the timeline. Maybe there’s an issue with a nested VEG when coming from a previous version? Try opening it in Vegas 8 first using File – Open, saving it under a new name in Vegas 8 format, and then using THAT file if you wish to nest it.

Tried your suggestion of opening the veg rather than dragging it…no go. Same problem- “The Com object failed to initialize”
    Both are media generator objects.
And whats a nested VEG that might be causing the problem?
    thx

It sounds like you have a generated media issue in that project or Vegas 8. You’ll need to figure out which.

A “nested VEG” is when you just drag it to the timeline. In your case, you were creating one by dragging the VEG file to the timeline instead of actually opening the file.

I get the same problem trying to open veg files from previous versions.
“the com object failed to meterialize.”
