  • Can’t reconnect offline Apple ProRes files in FCP project

Posted by Julia Morris on May 11, 2011 at 1:21 am

Have captured HDV with Apple ProRes codec. They come up as document files but I have no problem with viewing clips in fcp or qt. I have consolidated all captured files from three different drives to one new drive and now fcp won’t let me reconnect any of the files that are now offline. When going through the reconnect media dialogue box I can do every step but the last – the connect button is not highlighted.

I have exported as an xml file, then changed the html text to point to the new https://localhost/Volume and I still can’t find any way to connect the files. Also tried trashing the Thumbnail Cache Files.

Please explain “they come up as document files.” That does not compute. Precisely how did you determine that?

They have no file extension and in the preview pane it has Kind: Document. This is the way they were captured in. As mentioned though, they play in QT and in fcp when they are in their originally capture file pathway.

I am getting around the problem by manually adding .mov to each and reimporting to project but surely there is something simple I have missed in capturing.

When you captured them into FCP directly the app knew what file type they were, but when you moved them that broke the link, and so FCP had no way of knowing what they were because there was no suffix attached. In the future, use Media Manager to move files, as the link remains intact and no relinking is necessary.

Yes I have just been reading about Media Manager. A good lesson learned!
    Thank you David.

I had that issue as well (ingesting HDV as Prores and have it appear as text documents) until the 7.0.3 upgrade. Though you should probably make a copy of one of the problem files first, I’ve always been able to add the .mov extension to the ‘text document’ and FCP can see it just fine.

OK I’ll do the upgrade. Thanks.
