Can’t Play or Convert AVI File From Home Movie Camera!
This one has me stumped – must be some kind of encryption or something? I dunno.
I was given a camera card (SD) from a home movie camera to put onto DVD. Do it all the time. These are AVI files and MediaInfo shows them as mjpg – see bottom if you want the details.
ANYWAY – in vegas – they import – audio is fine – but video is “Scrambled” with all kinds of crazy colors and stuff. These files play FINE in WMP and Quicktime Player and they actually play fine if put into DVDA directly.
I try to convert them in AVS Video converter, and depending on which file type I choose, I get either only a split second of video that converts (like a 2 minute video will convert to a 15 frame video) or it converts but has a gray or green semi-transparent bar and some other noise across bottom 1/3 or so of picture. Also crashed AVS a couple times. Any Ideas Anyone?

Sounds like a codec problem. WMP, Quicktime Player and VLC use their own Codecs, but Vegas and most other professional editing programs use the codecs installed by Windows. (Codecs used to view videos are freely available from the codec patent owners. Codecs to encode video come with royalty payments.) Sony has licensed or outright own some of the most common codecs that are installed by Vegas.
Here is a utility that will examine your video file and tell you what codec was used to create the video:
WARNING – NEVER, ever install a codec pack. These are made for gamers for best player performance and often replace the otherwise good quality codecs installed by Vegas with ones really inferior for encoding video.

Vegas has built-in support for M-JPEG so it shouldn’t be a codec problem. If they play fine in QuickTime Player then you might want to purchase QuickTime Pro and convert them to another format with QuickTime.

I have the same problem. AVIs from other sources work fine but AVIs from my camcorder give an error message if I try to insert them into a project. I use FreeMake to convert them to WMVs.
