  • can’t play avi files in the source monitor!

    Hi,

I’m new to premiere, so got lots of dumb questions 🙁
    1. can’t play avi files in the source monitor. I imported an avi files in premiere, but when I open and play it in source monitor, it doesn’t show the file fluently. The sound is fine, but you only see random frames of the video making it impossible to set start/end points for editing.

    Please help

    Thanks

This could be a lot of things: slow CPU, slow hard drive, mismatched project settings, codec or video card problems, etc. What are your specs?

Thanks for the reply. well I put together this bad boy just couple months ago, so I doubt the problem would be with the speed etc. anyway here are the specs:

    motherboard: M3A78-T
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5000+ 2.61 GHz
    memory: 4gb
hard drive: western digital, 32mb cashe, 7200 RPM

    Thanks,

You have a fast system indeed. I guess it must be a codec problem if the file is AVI. Although, if you are working on HD footage or uncompressed avi, the hard drive must be having a hard time keeping up with the data rate. My quad core 1 TB hd system couldnt keep up until I use RAID.

no it’s not HD, plus the speed is more like 30sec/frame rather than the other way around (no joke!) so I’m more inclined to think that you’re right about the codec issue! which codecs should I get and where would I get them from!?

    Thanks,

    You can try this:
    https://www.free-codecs.com/download/Codec_Pack_All_In_1.htm

then download and install the codecs from microsoft website:
    1. windows media codecs
    2. windows media components for quicktime

The codecs from microsoft will overwrite whatever rogue codecs you might have previously installed, which is good. Also, try updating your media player and directx. I believe Premiere is using Directshow for playback so fixing these will likely fix your premiere as well.

    Hope this helps you.
