can’t open .veg file
I just tried to open a .VEG file in Sony Vegas 5.0, and I received an error message saying that the file can’t be opened because it’s in an “unsupported format.” This is not even an old project file; I was editing this project the day before yesterday. I also checked the file itself to be sure the extension was correct. It is most definitely correct.
Anyone know how I might be able to recover this project? Fast?

Do you possibly have V6.0 installed and started the project with it? I think that is the message you get when you try to open a project in an earlier version of Vegas.

No, I haven’t installed Vegas 6.0 on this machine at all. No version other than 5.0 has been on this machine at any point.
It looks like my problem is due to a drive error of some kind. I think I’m doomed to an all-night re-edit. Yay.

See if you have a file titled mymissingvideo.veg.bak anywhere on your drive. Ideally, it’s in the same folder as the bad veg file.
Try opening that one. You’ll need to select All Files (*.*) in the dropdown menu.
If it doesn’t open, move it to another folder and rename it to mymissingvideo.veg and try opening it again.
You have nothing to lose by trying this and, hopefuly, everything to gain.Mike

I’ve tried opening the .bak files, and I’ve tried the files in my autosave folder. Still no luck. I get the same error dialogue each time.

If you have the time, send the bad veg to Sony and they might be able to fix it.

I had something simular happen like that to me last night. Seemed like the message was something like yours. I realize my external hard drive wasn’t fully connecting/on…I checked the cable connections and restarted my computer and it worked.

Have also seen this with V6 but never in V5. Was about to give up on one job as was totally unable to open the Veg either by going to ‘file open’ in Vegas or clicking on the Veg directly. Renamed the veg.bak for the job and it still wouldn’t open.
As a last option I tried opening the veg from the ‘file’ menu using the last 1 to 6 opened files list and voila! It opened. hastily re-saved under an updated new name. Bit of a worry but a very rare occurrence in my experience. I always keep updating the saves with numbers like ‘jobname_01.veg, 02, 03, 04 etc so if the worst should happen, touch wood, you find yourself hopefully only having to drop back to the previous save version.
