  • Can’t open AVI or MPG video file in Quicktime

Posted by David Scherzer on September 29, 2007 at 11:15 pm

    Hello,

Hoping someone can help me. I received 2 versions of the same file and can open neither with Quicktime or Flip4Mac – so i can import them to FCP.

When i download the MPG, it turns into an HTML on my desktop.

When I download the AVI, Quicktime says I need third party softaware but doesn’t tell me which one. I see that the AVI was created with the IV50 Codec but when I went to download that codec, it was for PC, not Mac.

So, 2 Questions – would Quicktime Pro be able to solve this and if not, which file converter would allow me to?

    Thank you very much…

    1. No.

    2. Nothing on a Mac that I know of.

    All the best,

It’s impossible to say without trying, but this is your best bet:

    http://www.squared5.com

(The other file that downloads as an HTML file sounds like some sort of problem with the website. Get the info on the file, is it large enough to be a video file or something small like 2 KB?)

Probably there is nothing to do with the AVI if is based in a PC codec.
About the MPG, if is an MPG2 you need the QT MPG component or you need to have installed DVDSTPro to play it. The MPG1 should play fine with QT player. However make sure that the file got the extension added.
    Try what Jeff suggest: MPGStreamclip.
