    Cow world,
I have an HDV, 1080i, tape that I need to import into Premiere using a Canon XL-H1. However, when I put any tape into the Canon, Premiere doesn’t seem to recognize it. The camera will sometimes default to “HDV IN”, other times I get deck control, but no ability to see a picture or to capture. I usually use a Sony HDV deck, which works fine, so I know that Premiere has the ability on my system to capture from an HDV deck. This might be a question better suited for the Canon forum, but I thought I’d ask it here too.

    Hi Tim,

Most HDV cameras by default will downconvert HDV to DV on the 1394 output. Check the camera menu for “DV convt” and make sure it is OFF, and also, if there is a “VCR > HDV, DV, AUTO” setting, set it to HDV.

After getting camcorder set up correctly, it is best to turn off camera AND close Premiere. Next, power up camera, wait for Windows to recognize it (beep and/or message), then open Premiere last. Following this sequence will ensure that Premiere properly sees the HDV device.

That worked. Thanks Jeff. I’m not sure which setting it was, but it was definitely in those camera settings.
