A client gave me a movie clip generated with a KODAK Zi8 Pocket Video Camera. The codec is apparently Ambarella AVC encoder, 1280 x 720, 59.94. Quicktime plays the file without any trouble. FCP 6.0.6 won’t import the file – wrong file type or some such nonsense. I’ve tried converting the clip to H.264 and Apple Pro Res. Same problem. I’ve changed the permissions on the file to make sure that wasn’t the issue. I’m stumped. Any thoughts?

    Thanks – Tim

[Tim Silva] “FCP 6.0.6 won’t import the file – wrong file type or some such nonsense. “
There is a list of supported FC codecs.
FC is a video editing tool. Those are delivery codecs; no for editing.

Bad choice. Another non supported codec.

Use MPGStreamclip to convert your movie to Prores.

Already converted to ProRes. Didn’t work.

Once converted to Pro Res, does the file play at the OS level?

If you can play the raw AVC file at the OS level, have you tried using QT to do the conversion to Pro res? (Since you have FCP, the Pro ability is built into QT 7).

If it’s AVC, have you tried log and transfer?

Yes, I used QT to make the ProRes version and that didn’t work.

I have not tried the conversion with MPGDStreamclip. Would that make a difference?

I can’t get the file into FCP for Log and Capture.

Please post a screen grab of what the file structure looks like.
