  • Can’t hear audio when previewing tape in log/capture mode

Posted by Geralyn Abinader on September 2, 2005 at 6:42 pm

I’m drawing a blank here. I am in log and capture mode. I am simply viewing my tape (I am monitorless). I see the video fine. the audio meters are showing lots of audio, but I can’t hear anything through my headphones (plugged into computer). now I know when you are capturing you can’t hear audio, but I’m just previewing and was sure I should be able to hear audio.

FCP settings: audio output is set to internal.

Computer settings: audio output – built in audio.

thanks for the help in advance.

Just ot be clear – I’m not capturing, only viewing. thanks. Geralyn

The audio is, by default, MUTED to the Mac’s speaker output during Log and Capture.

You should normally monitor the audio directly from the camcorder or deck you are using to capture (it is the preferred method).

    CAUTION:
Many people have reported that noise or “pops” appear in the captured clips if the Mac’s internal audio is left on WHILE capturing… so may want to choose “Off During Capture.”

However, there is a way you can turn ON the Mac’s speaker if you really WANT to:

Final Cut Pro (menu) > Audio/Video Settings… > Capture Presets (tab)

“Duplicate” the Capture Preset you are now using, when the window opens rename it (I added “MacAudioOn” to the file name).

Click open the “Advanced” button in the Audio section and turn speakers to “ON during Capture.”
The Mac speakers/audio-out will now play Audio during the preview in the Log and Capture window.

I checked – there is no ‘advanced’ button for the audio, only video. now this is strange since the summary for the settings all have ‘Speakers: off’ listed, but no way to seemingly turn them on. any ideas? thanks, Geralyn

My suggestion is to not make this change in the first place.

Just listen via the deck/camcorder as FCP is designed.

(Hedadphones are a good way to do this.)

In FCP 5 the option to monitor or not monitor is in the record tool. Go to clip settings and down by the audio buttons in a box to turn on “preview”.
