  • Can’t get rid of interlaced scan lines on WMV export

Posted by Mike Sussman on January 4, 2010 at 5:13 pm

I’m got my customized WMV export settings (basically 320×240 @ 756+48kbps) in Avid set to progressive scan but left-to-right motion still dramatically shows interlacing scan lines. As an experiment I set the export settings to interlaced scan lines but I still get the shifted horizontal lines on left-to-right motion. Wasn’t the progressive scan setting I had in the first place supposed to remove this unintended effect? Any suggestions on how to tweak my WMV settings to not get the horizontal interlaced scan lines?

(P.S. We normally use Sorenson Squeeze which does a phenomenal job at this but there are times we prefer to export to WMV straight from Avid)

I think that the “progressive” export setting merely determines how the WMV should flag the resulting export. I don’t think it allows you to deinterlace during export. But it’s a guess.

I agree with Job. You need to deinterlace first.

You can do that in Avid by using the fluidmotion effect or even the standard motion effect set to 100 percent motion and duplicated field.

This is not the most elegant approach. You are better off sending a QT ref to Sorenson which is free with MC and doing the deinterlace at that compression stage.
