  • Can’t get DaVinci Resolve 8 up and running on my MBP

Posted by Bruce Patterson on November 25, 2011 at 7:57 pm

    Hi there,

I have been having trouble getting DaVinci Resolve 8 working on my MBP and it’s really bumming me out. I have a 1.5 yr old MBP (2.66 GHz i7, 8gb ram, SSD) running OS 10.7.2

I installed the program and have the serial number stick in one of my USB ports. When I initially launch it I noticed on the scrolling msgs screen that it says “No Database Connected!” and sure enough the first window is trying to get me to connect my database (Create new, connect, optimize, backup, restore, cancel are my options). I tried to “create new” but I’m not sure what do plug in for “Host”. If I leave it as default it won’t let me create it. Is there a way to just launch this sucker and start using it a little more easily? I’m just trying to run it with my MBP, not over any fancy network etc…

I’m also not sure how to create a user (if I need to do this…).

Any help in getting me up and running would be much appreciated – a little stuck and frustrated here…

Did you get a kernel panic when you were installing? I would bet that the software installed but the PostRes database situation didn’t get installed. Reinstall and as long as the system requirements are met it should work out.

No Beachball (Kernel Panic) but I do eventually get into the settings panel (after a few “cancels”) but if I try to load an exported FCP 7 XML file the program crashes…

i would uninstall and install latest 8.1.1
then make sure the “auto graphics switching” is off. need to make sure the discreet GPU is only one selected (not the built in intel).

On some machines we’ve seen the database installation fail, and this causes the database to not start up properly.

A fix for this requires a few command for you to type on the terminal. This will uninstall the database, so the next install of Resolve will install it properly.

    1) Stop the server
    sudo /sbin/SystemStarter stop postgresql-8.4
    2) Remove menu shortcuts:
    sudo rm -rf /Applications/PostgreSQL 8.4
    3) Remove the ini file
    sudo rm -rf /etc/postgres-reg.ini
    4) Removing Startup Items
    sudo rm -rf /Library/StartupItems/postgresql-8.4
    5) Remove the data and installed files
    sudo rm -rf /Library/PostgreSQL/8.4
    6) Delete the user postgres
    sudo dscl . delete /users/postgres

Now, re-install Resolve, reboot, and then start Resolve.

    Hope this helps!

    Regards,
    Rohit
