Can’t get AVI’s in Vegas 10
Posted by Dave Lozinski on December 17, 2010 at 4:23 pmHey everyone,
I’ve seen a lot of people having this problem, but I haven’t found any solutions that have worked for me.
I have Vegas 10 Pro on WIndows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. It won’t recognize or allow me to drop any AVI files into a project.
The AVI’s play fine in Windows Media player.
I have tried installing the K-Lite codec pack, then relaunching Vegas – didn’t work.
I tried intalling the Shark007 codec pack and then relaunching Vegas — didn’t work.
I used the GSpot program to inspect what kind of codec was used to encode the AVI files, and it says, “WMV3 – codecs are installed” and “cvid – codecs are installed”
How do I get Vegas Pro 10 to recognize these AVI files when apparently the codecs are installed?
Thanks!

You should NEVER install a “codec” pack. Good luck getting your system back to normal.
[Dave Lozinski] “I used the GSpot program”
That’s the correct thing to do. Remember Vegas requires a “Video for Windows” codec. It’s possible that you have a “DirectX” codec installed but NOT a “VfW” codec. You need to locate the proper VfW codec and install only that ONE codec.

December 17, 2010 at 5:26 pmThis is the error message I receive in Vegas trying to open any AVI file that I have…
When I click on “details”, it just shows the name and path of the AVI file I’m trying to import into Vegas.
How do I get around this? Does anyone have any AVI codecs installed on Windows 7 Ultimate and able to load AVI’s into Vegas Pro 10 64-bit?
Here’s the output from GSpot showing the codec as being installed:

Help anyone please! 🙂

December 17, 2010 at 11:54 pmI dropped it onto Pro 8, 9 and 10 and had no problems playing it.
ffdshow is the only additional (DirectShow and VFW) codec I have on my machine (XP Pro, SP3). -

December 18, 2010 at 2:42 amThanks. But you weren’t using the 64-bit version of Vegas were you?
I tried it last night on my XP 32-bit version of Vegas 10 and it works perfectly.
So I went to the Sony website and they had an update for the aviplug.dll. I downloaded that, put it in the FileIO plugin folder, and now it can at least be “imported” into the project, but is still unrecognized.
With other AVI’s, it recognizes and puts their sound on the timeline.
So it has to be an issue with Vegas and their dlls (or whatever they use) for importing AVI’s into Vegas 10.
HOWEVER! UPDATE! I CAN NOW CONFIRM IT IS AN ISSUE WITH VEGAS 10 and their DLL’S!
I took the aviplug.dll file from the32-bit version of Vegas 10 and IT NOW WORKS.
So the 64-bit version of the aviplug.dll file is BROKEN in Vegas 10!
Hopefully Sony will get this fixed!

December 18, 2010 at 11:25 amDon’t blame Sony for something that could be your fault.
You’ve admitted to installing two different codec packs.
Browse this and other Vegas forums and you’ll discover that doing this has caused problems exactly like yours to several Vegas users.
The only guaranteed solution is to wipe the system drive, do a brand new install of everything and only install exactly what you need. -

December 18, 2010 at 2:29 pmYeah, this is true. I did install the codec packs. However, that was only after other suggestions from various locations failed to rectify the issue.
In some other forums, people with 64-bit Vegas 10 on Windows 7 are having the same issue with the same AVI file I provided a link for (plus other AVIs).
With 32-bit Vegas 10 everything is apparently fine.
Replacing Sony’s 64-bit aviplug.dll with the 32-bit version seems to fix the problem.
If there was something wrong within Windows 7, I wouldn’t expect the 32-bit version to work either.
I could be wrong, but to me that says a Sony dll issue.
Ah well… live and learn. At least it’s able to recognize AVI files now, especially those in my saved projects. 🙂

December 18, 2010 at 4:20 pmWhat has been known to happen after installing a codec pack is that they can overwrite existing codecs and you definitely don’t want this to happen.
If you don’t believe me, check out posts by John Rofrano on the other Vegas forum here on the Cow.
Uninstalling them doesn’t cure the problem and that’s why I suggested a complete re-install of everything, starting with your OS.
If you don’t do it, now is a good time to get into the habit of doing a backup of drive C before you install anything like this as a System Restore may not fix the problem.
That way, if the new program causes a problem, restoring the backup gets you up and running as before. -

December 18, 2010 at 4:31 pmOh I believe you. No problem there. 🙂
I was just explaining that I had the issue *before* installing codecs, therefore I don’t believe the codecs were the root cause of the problem.
The only programs I had installed before Vegas were Adobe Photoshop CS5, Adobe Acrobat, MS Office 2010, Firefox, and a few misc utilities as I have a brand new laptop and loaded Windows 7 Ultimate on it.
So who knows? Maybe Adobe programmed something in to “wipe out” the competition? 😉

December 29, 2010 at 5:12 amCan you advise me the link to download the updated Aviplug.dll? I try to find it from Sony’s website but got no luck.
Thanks for your help in advance!
