  • Can’t get a dvd in 16:9 or letterbox

Can’t seem to get a 1hr HDV from FCP7 to iDVD as letterbox or 16:9, did 4 or 5 dvds already and all are squeezed. Original ftg and QT file are both 16:9 but lose it when going to iDVD. I’ve never tried Studio. Ftg right now is only for transcribing the words.

Why are you using iDVD and not DVD Studio Pro?

If I knew iDVD, I might be able to help, but I don’t…

I’ve never used Studio Pro, actually spent the last 3 hrs trying to get it to work, but some element was always missing. Back to the books I guess.

It’s like being on a raft drifting away and someone says they can’t help because they’ve never been on a raft.

HDV is 1440 x 1080 so iDVD may be interpreting it as 4:3 not anamorphic 16:9. If you want to stick with this limited DVD software, try export a quicktime movie and change settings to 1920 x 1080 ProRes422.

I like Shane have never used iDVD. DVDSP is not the easiest program to work with but it at least gives proper control. If you use it, Compressor does the better conversion to mpeg. I wouldn’t trust iDVD to scale down and create a quality mpeg from an HDV file.

#42 – Quick and dirty way to author a DVD

Shane’s Stock Answer #42 – David Roth Weiss’ Secret Quick and Dirty Way to Author a DVD:

The absolute simplest way to make a DVD using FCP and DVDSP is as follows:

    1. Export a QT movie, either a reference file or self contained using current settings.

    2. Open DVDSP, select the “graphical” tab and you will see two little monitors, one blue, one green.

    3. Select the left blue one and hit delete.

    4. Now, select the green one, right click on it amd select the top option “first play”.

    5. Now drag your QT from the broswer and drop it on top of the green monitor.

    6. Now, for a DVD from an HD source, look to the right side and select the “general tab” in the track editor, and see the Display Mode, and select “16:9 pan-scan.”

    7. Hit the little black and yellow burn icon at the top of the page and put a a DVD in when prompted. DVDSP will encode and burn your new DVD.

    THATS ALL!!!

NOW…if you want a GOOD LOOKING DVD, instead of taking your REF movie into DVD SP, instead take it into Compressor and choose the BEST QUALITY ENCODE (2 pass VBR) that matches your show timing. Then take THAT result into DVD SP and follow the rest of the steps. Except you can choose “16:9 LETTERBOX” instead of PAN & SCAN if you want to see the entire image.

I made it to Compressor with the QT file, had the file finished but when I went to DVD Studio Pro, it was working well until the burn and then it said the file was incompatible and said to go to iDVD and/or other odd choices?

Well, getting closer, followed your last post, and it came out letterboxed, but no audio. I compressed the ftg thru Compression (my first attempt at the program ever) and realized it has two tracks, video and audio.

Played it and video was fine (purpose of the ftg is to transcribe the interview so quality is fine).

I must have only dragged the video to the green box?

I tried the straight QT file and it wouldn’t work.

I might have posted this already but can’t see it. Tried your suggestion and it worked, except no audio.

I have 5 of the same file, 2 are .mov from FCP, 2 are thru Compression (audio & video) and two I don’t know where they came from, just a error msg that says Video TS folder. (I know what that means, just don’t know why it shows up)

I seem to get same error msg I can find. I tried just a QT file and msg reads Import Error (one or more files failed to import).

It’s almost like I should just wipe out everything and start again? Or I just give them the squeezed versions, it’s only for transcription, the project is at the early states, no editing for at least a few months. Hate to do that, but I cannot figure this out. Steenbecks were far easier.

Appreciate your help, it just seems to overwhelm me.

Well, I don’t know what I do wrong, I have now tried at least 4 different methods and still can’t come up with the dvd. I make it thru Compression but when I attempt to burn, it says “VIDEO_TS folder found in build file… must remove”.

Somehow I don’t seem to place files where they’re supposed to be and not where they are…

Honestly, I’m not a dummy, I just don’t get this thing that sounds so simple to you guys…
