  • Can’t find old custom folder of FX that’s crashing FCPX

I’m getting regular beach-ball crashes with FCPX 10.2.2 recently.

These happen whenever I click on ALL, or do a search for any particular effects.

I think I’ve tracked it down to a custom folder I created in a previous version of FCPX. Clicking on this folder name (“RIKKI”), always causes a crash, so I suspect, the search and the ALL, are triggering the same issue.

So, it should be a simple thing to delete the folder from my system – I don’t need these particular FX.

However, I’ve looked in the usual places:
    Library/ApplicationSupport/FinalCutPro
    User/Movies/MotionTemplates

    and done system searches

and I just can’t find this folder anywhere.

This might of course be the problem. FCPX is also looking for the folder, not finding it, and crashing.

So any techy ideas how to remove the folder from FCPX effects list under these circumstances, if it doesn’t actually exist on my computer?

I take it these effects were custom Motion based ones? If so then removing them from the Motion templates folder is all there is to it. If it involved any effects with custom installed components, then you may have to contact the author to find out how to uninstall it completely. There could be parts of the plugin still lurking elsewhere (generally in one of the two Application Support folders but not necessarily under FinalCutPro).

In any event, have you tried resetting Final Cut’s preferences? Also, try logging in as a new user and see if the crash still happens, that way you’ll know if it’s Final Cut in general, or just something in your user account.

FCPX scans for plugins on launch and, because an added effect turns up pretty much immediately, I assume it also watches the Motion Templates folder for changes. If all else fails, you might try re-installing FCPX to see if that forces a full refresh of the plugins.

    Thanks for the advice.

I’ve realised that the problem is actually a saved preset – I’d created the category “RIKKI”, but can’t find this folder anywhere.

It seems that the new ‘category’ system doesn’t actually create new folders (certainly on my system), instead somehow embedding the category info along with the preset name, which appears in Preferences/Application Support/ProApps

So, I managed to fix the current problem by deleting the offending preset, and, da-da, the category disappeared too, so I don’t get crashes.

However, this has opened a new can of worms, because I’ve realised that any attempt to save a preset is crashing FCPX, and coming back in, any attempt to access the saved preset takes me back to crash scenario.

I’ve done all the usual things – trashed preferences, caches, saved states, etc. Logged in in safe mode, used disc utility to fix permissions, etc.

As long as I don’t have any saved presets, and as long as I don’t try to save one, everything works very smoothly, but all those usual techniques seem to have no effect on the issue that saving presets causes.

I see another poster had similar problem, but fixed with these usual steps (https://forums.creativecow.net/thread/344/38894).

When I try to save a preset, taking a look after the crash (and just before the next one), I see that the preset gets saved with an incomplete outline image. I don’t know whether this is usual for saved presets or an indication/clue of the problem.

Further research leads me to conclude I may need to do update some 3rd party effects, as this new ‘save FX preset option’ is crashing other folks’ systems too, but when I try saving FCPX own FX I’m having no problem.
