Can’t find file message (but file isn’t in project)
Posted by Steve Bertone on March 6, 2013 at 2:32 amI have a situation that comes up on all projects. If I add an image, but later on decide to remove the image from the timeline, as well as remove it from my computer, next time I open veg it says that file is missing. If I ask to ignore it, next time I open veg it will ask me again. The file isn’t even being used in timeline so why is it searching for it?? I’m basically forced to choose a file to replace it with. Luckily it won’t be used so it doesn’t matter but annoying none the less. Is this a bug in Vegas?

March 6, 2013 at 4:41 amI love it. Simple answers always are somewhere…or here shohuld I say. Thank you! The only left over issues I have is a post i created a few days ago on audio file issues. I believe there is no quick fix for this.
it originated in my current project Ive been working on for a week or two. Lots of events, and many mp3 files added. Was working perfect. All of a sudden i go to open my veg on saturday and all the mp3’s wont play. They will play if I play them outside of vegas, but in the timeline…nothing. They arent muted, my speakers work etc. They actually play sound for a video event i imported…which is weird.
If I erase the whole timeline and start from scratch, it doesnt matter what mp3 i add, the sound is still from this video event. I tried reinstalling, different builds, and at first it was fixed, but then once i shutdown my comp and opened back up….same issue. All video events play perfectly and there sound is fine.
Today I tried, starting a new project, adding different video events, and then adding some mp3’s to play over it. Every mp3 i added would only play the audio of the video/audio event. not the mp3. If I ungroup and strip out the audio from the video and just have the mp3 playing…still plays the audio that was tied to the video…In a lot of cases its just silence on most of audio track for that mp3.
I would say its a bug, but i tried both the 394 and 486 build and no difference. Cant even restore my computer bc my restore points I cant restore from as microsoft says there is some disk error. I cant believe though that this disk error would cause a problem i am only seeing in vegas…Any Thoughts whatsoever on this would be much appreciated. As some extra notes, I have moved none of these audio files. Let me know if you have any questions…this is all I have been working to fix over last few days. Out of things to try..

Hmmm… therein may lie the problem. You might need to run a scan disk to search for file system errors and locate and fix bad sectors. If you don’t know what I am talking about, search Windoze help for ‘scan disk’ or ‘check a drive for errors’.
You may need to restart your PC and leave it for a couple of hours to do its thing.
If this is a new PC, it could be a dud hard drive on its way out. If this is an old PC, it could be a dying hard drive or signs of a failing power supply that had become inefficient (happened to me about a year ago).
The other possibility is that Vegas does not like the program that was used to create the mp3 in the first place, in which case IT WILL typically play in media player, but not Vegas.
Have you by chance installed any audio or video codec packs of any type? Vegas gets really upset 🙂

March 7, 2013 at 2:41 amThanks Nigel. Ran the scan disk from windows and could find any errors funny enough. Either my power supply fan or CPU fan has been whining and making noise for last few weeks. Maybe is power supply issue. Just bought this Asus in January. Luckily I have a friend at bestbuy and have it all covered under warranty ; ) could well possibly be a bad drive combined with other issues. Ill let everyone know..

March 7, 2013 at 5:59 amGary James of Vegasaur fame (https://www.nfatoys.com/moasoftwarellc/) recently ran into exactly this scenario just recently. You can find his posts on the Vegas forums: Audio file strangeness
His solution was: “I used Format Factory to copy the .MP3 to a WMA file; then I used MP3TAG to copy the .MP3 tags to the WMA file. Now the WMA can be opened up in Vegas. I’m just curious as to why this particular .MP3 behaves so strangely.”

March 7, 2013 at 7:09 pmHi Stephen, The audio issue im having is not for a particular file. All mp3’s i import, doesnt matter which, wont play or wont play the mp3’s audio but will play some audio track that is tied to some event I imported in some other project in the past. Extremely weird…Doesnt matter if I start a project from scratch etc, it will still play audio from some random event from some past project (but not from an mp3)Usally wil be the same events audio until I open a new project and bring in a new event with different audio. Then every mp3 will keep using parts of the audio from the imported event.
Very confusing to explain, and I am sure to read.
