Can’t edit video portion of Divx file

Ok, if you wanted to edit the file – why render to DivX instead of DV-AVI or something less lossy?

DivX is, technically, not supported by Vegas. Many have gotten it to work. Do a search for DivX or XVid and you’ll get lots of hits and suggestions. Bottom line – you don’t have the proper codec installed for Vegas to see the video.

I did search prior to my initial post and did not find any relevant posts.

I need to edit some divx files from an outside source. I only rendered to divx to see if Vegas could open a file that it had rendered.

I don’t understand why a codec which is sufficient to render a divx file and also for playing in media players is not sufficent for Vegas to see the video.

Because there are different codecs that work in different environments. WMP can use some codecs that Vegas can’t see.

Thank you for the links. It looks like it would be best to convert the divx files to an avi type that Vegas can handle.

That’s a tiny, fast tool
for getting out video from divx.

I have vdub. I tried using it for this but it was going to take hours to do just one 30 minute video. I set both audio and video for Full Processing Mode. I tried a variety of codecs.

Divx is fast to decode,
you should choose a codec
wich is faster to encode.
Try Morgan Multimedia MJPEG,
it’s horribly fast, and very good
quality at encode and decode.
It is free for 60 days.
Vdub and vegas works fine
with it.

Since the files have already been heavily compressed once and will be heavily compressed again when I render from Vegas, I’m wondering if it’s good to convert to a heavily compressed format to prepare for editing.

I thought you want to edit an already rendered file, let’s say
because you lost the source footage.
If yes, go on.

At least I myself didn’t find another way to alter a divx
file, just recode it to anything Vegas can eat.
Mjpeg or huffyuv avi is one of the choices, and are not so highly
compressed as divx. You can figure out
other solutions as well.

20 minutes of 720*576 25 fps (MJPEG) video (PAL) is a bit more then
2.3 GB. Is this highly compressed? ;))

I guess MJPEG isn’t as lossy as I thought. Thanks for the suggestion.
