This is the right way to solve it. G-Spot will not only tell you what codec the file uses but it will also tell you if it’s installed. MediaInfo will just tell you what codec the file needs. Then go find that codec and install it. If you are using the 64-bit version of Vegas Pro you will also need the 64-bit version of that codec.

But beware of buying a codec package such as K Lite as there have been many reports of difficulties when this has been done. Much better to import the specific codec and preferably from the author’s own site.

I guess I have to ask if you tried to play the .avi file first on your system without using Vegas? What I mean is, awhile back I had an issue under Windows 7 and I could no longer play .avi files. I ended up having to re-install the IndeoVideo codec v5.11 and then performing this.

1. Install IndeoVideo v5.11 with Custom install options

2. Uncheck the Web Browser box and install software

3. Open a ‘command prompt’ using a rightclick, select, ‘Run as Administrtor’

4. Type: cd C:\Windows\SysWOW64 (32bit users can skip this step) – press enter

5. Type: regsvr32 ir50_32.dll – press enter

I was then able to play .avi’s fine. I’m not saying this is your issue but the above recommendations will at least tell you if you have the IndeoVideo codec on your system.

Yea, I was going to mention that but it may be too late for the warning. It sounds like lots of codecs have been installed including QuickTime which doesn’t have anything to do with Windows AVI files. Let’s see what codec the file really needs but the damage may have already been done w.r.t. K-Lite. Let’s hope not.

soz guys, didn’t looked at pc today, btw i already tried to import a single codec or so and didn’t worked!
also what is the problem about k lite?i used it for years, i never had problems! not even with Vegas, what’s so bad with it, if may i can ask?

It blindly replaces some of the high quality codecs that you paid Sony for with free alternatives that might not be as good. We have seen people have render problems with certain codecs and then uninstall K-Lite and re-install Vegas Pro and the problem goes away. This has happened several times so it all points to K-Lite being the problem.

A significant number of people on different forums have reported problems. sometimes quite seriou and not always confined to Vegas, after installing the K Lite package. I’ve seen very few favourable reactions to the package. The general and very sound advice is to avoid it at all costs.

Hello, i didn’t had time these days, but today i formatted once again, and decided to try to deal withouth any pack, in the end i listen to the guys abose, tried with media info, and it said it was a fraps file, even if actually i didn’t used fraps to record it, but another program, still i already had fraps on the second HD, but well i tried to uninstall/reinstall and looks like it actually works now, oh my god i feel so damn stupid that i wasted so much time for this thing, and in the end it was just like….
