  • Can’t capture using Canon ZR-60, Lacie 250GB FW 800 and Final Cut pro 5.1.4

Hello there…I’m new to FCP but so far I was doing fine capturing footage with a rented Canon XL-1 to my Lacie 250 Firewire 800 uisng FCP 5.1.4.
My OS is X -the latest upgrade.
However, the camera I own is a Canon ZR-60 and when I try to capture video with it, either FCP freezes, or the Lacie HD icon dissappears from the desktop. Unplugging the ZR-60 unfreezes FCP but then I can’t capture footage. On the occassions when FCP doesn’t freeze, I try to open the capture window but a message tells me that it can’t initialize the device. I tried changing the firewire protocol to NTSC basic but it won’t work. If connect the XL-1 back in, all is well and I can capture footage to my lacie HD. I read somewhere in the posts from 2004 that two firewire devices cannot be connected to the same firewire bus and that a sort of firewire card was needed but this only applies to regular desktops Macs, not a laptop.
Also, one solution was to disconnect the Lacie HD, capture with the ZR-60 to the internal macintosh drive, then disconnect the camera, plug the lacie back in and copy the files from the Macintosh drive to the Lacie…but why all this if everything works fine with the XL-1?
Am I missing some upgrade somewhere?

    Please help if you can..
    much appreciated…

This camcorder does work with FCP.

There is a menu item ( AV-DV ), turn this off.
Also, make sure you turn on the camcorder, in VCR mode, before starting FCP.

    FW400 for the Canon.

    Hope this helps.

Thanks for the help…I checked the Canon ZR60’s menus and AVtoDV was off, I turned connected FW400 before starting FCP and I still get the same problems. FCP just doesn’t recognize it…are there “drives” i can get somewhere? I used to edit with Premiere Pro 1.5 and I never had an issue with the Canon ZR-60 but I remember that there was a drop down list to choose models from…nothing like that on FCP-only FW basic and that doesn’t work…
    hmm…
I ended up getting the DVI to video adaptor so that I can see on my TV what I’m editing but it’s not nearly as good as the signal I used to get out of my Canon ZR-60 acting as a transcoder…
if worst come to worst, I’ll have to digitize to the internal Mac HD and then copy to the Firewire…
any more ideas? Thanks a lot..
