I just received my canopus advc300 in the mail. I’m trying to convert Hi8 tapes (using my Sony Hi 8 Handycam Vision) to DVD. I hooked everything up, but when I go to log and capture, I have no control of the device. If I hit play on the camera, I will see the video in FCP, but it won’t let me Capture. I have no idea what I’m doing wrong. Could someone please help because I just spent a lot of money on this. Thank you in advance.

I have a cord that plugs into the camera with a Yellow and Black RCA connector. You can see it here.

I’ve also tried the S cable for video.

You need to set device to Non-Controlable device. You can not have device control with your setup.

Actually, I spoke too soon. I still can’t capture.. I can click on Capture, but no window opens. What is happening?

Connect your analog cables into the input of the Canopus 300. Then connect the Canopus to your computer with Firewire. In your setup, Choose Format:NTSC (or PAL) and Use: DV NTSC or DV NTSC Firewire Basic (or the PAL versions in you’re in PAL land). You should be good to go.

I guess I should have asked if you have firewire first but I assume you do.

This method does work as I have used it a lot for analog captures.

    Cheers,

Do the analog cables plug into the front or back of the Canopus?

To the Input jacks. I believe they’re on the front.

It still doesn’t work. So, on the front of my Canopus ADVC 300 I have one audio cord plugged in, and S cable and the DV I/O plugged into my computer. What am I doing wrong? Nothing is plugged in on the back except the power cord. I have everything set up the way you said and nothing is happening. It won’t let me capture. When I press Capture Now, no screen pops up to say it’s capturing. I’m so confused because I’ve logged and captured many times from cameras. Please help, this is driving me crazy!!!

Make sure the Canopus is set for analog input.

It is. I am just going to capture through QuickTime. I just won’t work with FCP.

OK. Whatever works for you. I can’t help but think that one step along the way is wrong in your setup and I only say this because I have captured hundreds of hours of analog footage with the exact same setup. I’m glad you found a solution that works.
