  • Canopus ADVC110 & monitoring video

Posted by Phil Yunker on January 14, 2006 at 2:22 am

I’ve searched and searched for some info on this (even on the CANOPUS site and emailing Mr. Hoffman direct) and I still can’t find a solution.
I’m tryinig to monitor video on a NTSC television set from FCPHD thru a CANOPUS ADVC110 and I’m not having any success.
I’m able to capture fine from a VCR and a DVD player. I’m also able to see the color bar out put from the 110, however when I play the timeline in Final Cut Pro HD no video on the NTSC television set(I should be able to see the video, correct?) I’ve read some of the earlier posts about some units arriving to customers and being “bad” or “DOA” could this unit be “DOA”? Can someone give me a hand about what Dip switches need to be on (currently I have #2 and #5 on and the digital in is on, also in the Audio/Video settings onthe A/V devices tab I have Apple firewire selected for video and for audio I have firewire DV.) I’m running a G5 with 2.5GHz, 2 GB RAM, Mac OS X 10.3.9

    Thanks,
    Phil

Are you pressing that silver button?

    Also:

    #8 External Monitor Viewing.

    Shane’s Stock Answer #8:

A simple path is mac > firewire > camera or deck > rca cables > tv

Then start up your camera and tv, then open fcp.

Then go View > External video > all frames
Video playback should be Apple firewire NTSC (If you are using an NTSC set)
Audio playback should be Audio follows Video

Techinially, this should send synched video to your TV

If for some reason you can’t view your timeline on your external monitor, there are a few things to try:

    1) Make sure that the camera/deck is connected and powered on BEFORE you open FCP.

    2) In the Final Cut Pro menu select AUDIO/VIDEO Preferences and make sure your signal is being sent out thru Firewire DV.

    3) Go to the menu and select VIEW>EXTERNAL>ALL FRAMES.

    4) Click in the % box above the image and select FIT TO WINDOW.

    5) Go to VIEW->refresh A/V devices

    6) Make sure the Log & Capture window is closed

If you want it to play in both the canvas and the external monitor you need to go to the FINAL CUT PRO menu and select AUDIO/VIDIO settings and make sure MIRROR ON DESKTOP is selected under the PLAYBACK OUTPUT section

This is useful information, but my question is why does my audio feed to my external monitor sound like the voice of the exorcist? I have my path looking like this Mac w/ FCP open> 6-6 firewire> canopus> RCA cables out of canopus to splitter in> to splitter out> to external monitor audio input. The video shows perfectly; the sound is there and you can hear it a little bit, but it’s being over powered by some kind of static or some muffled sound. What should I do? is this a settings problem, syncing? help!!!
