Canon XLH1 HDV control issues with Final Cut
Posted by Gene Bauer on March 20, 2007 at 6:19 pmTrying to capture footage on a MAC G5 running Final Cut Studio 5.1.4 and having major lockups. We are using Easy setup 1080/60i and tried some others. Final Cut will lock up during capture and require a hard reboot. The lockups are very random…sometimes right away or it can take a while. The Canon works fine on a Windows based Sony Vegas. Does anyone have any tips on how to get a Final Cut and the Canon XLH1 to like each other or at least be on talking terms?

March 20, 2007 at 6:26 pmThe XLH1 is a CAMERA. It is not a tape deck, regardless of what the CAMERA guys may tell you.

Yes Steve, but you can still capture from it. You can capture from every HDV camera out there. Well, in theory. I haven’t been able to capture from the XL H1 via firewire. FCP wouldn’t see it. I had to resort to my Kona card.
But I heard others had success.

March 20, 2007 at 6:34 pmSo I gather that capturing from the camcorder is a shaky situation. Any settings that might make it behave more like a deck?

March 20, 2007 at 9:48 pmSure, the XL H1 is a camera. It does however have a feature that most HDV decks don’t have -HD SDI output, so it is the ingest deck of choice for me. Also many cheap HDV decks share the same mechanism as HDV cameras and are firewire so they are like a camera without a lens. Newer decks like the HDV 1500 are true decks and will outperform all cameras but at a price.
Connect the SDI from the XL H1 to an input card (Decklink or Kona). Connect a firewire cable to the camera. In the camera settings menu makes sure SDI output is on and the AV/DV option is on. Now in FCP load a standard capture setting (in my case I use HDTV 1080 50i) and change the device control to basic firewire DV PAL ( NTSC if that is your flavour). Voila, the camera behaves like a standard DV firewire device and outputs HD SDI. I have used this simple setting to online numerous HD programs. No messy component or using boxes like Miranda or Convergent to do the job the camera does. It is not at all shaky. Rock solid and in sync.
Of course you may choose to convert the HDSDI to any codec you wish. One word of warning tho – the XL H1 doesn’t embed audio in the SDI. It’s cheaper cousin the XH G1 does have SDI and embedded audio.

March 22, 2007 at 9:16 pmYes we tried the HDV 1080i60 setup with same problems.
Michael G…We’re going to try the firewire and HD SDI setup…sounds like it might work.. I’ll have to wait until the camera is available. Thanks to all for their help -

October 7, 2016 at 3:11 pmSo first things first. I know this is a old post. But I found a Canon XLH1 with a DV tape where there is 3 channel audio.
Turning the SDI output on and the AV/DV option on did it for captureing via FC. But I can’t get the 3 channel audio. Only the first two.
Any ideas?

October 7, 2016 at 5:29 pmNot via SDI.
I use the Thunderbolt port from my iMac (Late 2013) and use a FireWire Adapter to connect the Canon XLH1.Just tried it in Premiere Pro CS5, same problem. Perfect picture and 2 channel audio. Only the 3 en 4 channel aren’t importerd/captured.
According adobe, canon and FC it should work but for some reason it doesn’t.
