  • Canon XHA1s not recognised by FCP 5

    This came into a group I run…..
“I’m having problems capturing HDV footage from a Canon XHA1s. I get the message:

    “Unable to Initialise Capture Device
Device is not connected or the capture preset is not setup correctly. You may still log offline clips. ”

Log & Capture Box says: No Communication.

    BUT

the Canon XHA1s DOES appear on the Firewire section of hardware connected (about this Mac) and I can capture in iMovie. I’ve checked all the discussion boards but I’m cannot capture footage.

I’m using Final Cut Pro 5.1.4, Mac OSX 10.6.2: the connection is a 6 pin Firewire.

Any ideas will be gratefully taken on board!”
I wondered if it’s just the version of FCP being too old to have those codecs? Help anyone?

The camera needs to be connected before FCP is started, or you need to refresh A/V devices in FCP. Then the Capture preset set to be HDV or HDV to ProRes, and the device control setting needs to be HDV Basic. Canon uses that protocol. Otherwise you get the error message you’ve posted.
