I’ve capture HDV 1080i footage in PPro2 using Firewire/default 1080i/30fps project. I’m just playing it back in time line and I’m very disappointed in Quality compared to when I connect camera directly to HD monitor. It seems to show issues with de-interlacing and colors looks like faded. The PPro monitor window quality is set to best. So here are my questions:

    1. Is related to the way PPro has implemented HDV?
    2. Will using and capturing with (Black magic intensity) HDMI give better quality?
    3. Am I using the wrong project template? (I’ve downloaded Canon templates and results are almost same)
    4. What is the best practice/work flow to maximize quality?

Thanks for your inputs and help.

    Hello,

I have not seen these issues working with HDV material. I have found the capture in Premeire Pro for HDV to be very problematic such as audio going out of sync, lagging system and unresponsive capture window.

I have been testing to see how Cineform fits before I buy it, so far it allows me to do a scene detect capture so each time the tape was recorded and stopped in breaks it into a new captured clip. I have found Cineform to be better quality in terms of the compression applied to the clip, I can also edit and scrub as if the clip is dv quality as well no system lags and stopped responding errors.

I have found the Cineform to be a good capture solution for HDV material over the firewaire.

HDMI just gives you a clearer recording input, especially if you are recording direct live form the cameras HDMi direct to your PC, as you can literally bypass the MPEG compression of HDV when its recorded to tape.

Recording via the HDMi again once you have captured to tape you will not really see much difference.

Try a trial of Cineform for Premiere pro. http://www.cineform.com try Aspect or prospect HD.
