Canon AVCHD clip imports failing
I am having trouble transferring longer duration clips into a FCP project. I have set the project up only for this footage, there are no other formats involved. I am using log and transfer, which instantly recognizes the HF20 camera and clips. It seems that only the shorter, like one minute to 4 minute clips transfer, and the longer clips, like a 12 minute clip I am trying to bring in, fail. I can select “Retry” in the queue, and the clip will import a little more before stalling and failing.
I know the clips have to transcode upon import, and according to the Log and Transfer preferences, are doing so to ProRes 422. I cannot see or find any duration settings that is limiting clip imports of a certain duration. I have previously imprted extremely long clips with no problem, but cannot remember if I did it using FCP 6 or 7.
Hope someone has some suggestions. I am running Snow Leopard, and FCP 7 on a MacPro with dual Quad core Intel Xeon processors, running at 3Ghz, 6 gigs of 800 Mhz DDR2 RAM. I use an external 6TB Gspeed drive, mirrored. I have 1.3 TB of free space. I also use an AJA

Get ClipWrap ($50). Not only is it faster, but it handles pretty much anything, and can encode to a lot of formats. And is more reliable than FCP when it comes to AVCHD. Dunno what I’d do without it.

Thanks Shane, I’ll look into it. Not sure what the problem is exactly but after about 5 retrys, the clip finally transferred into Final Cut, much to my surprise. Might be some other issue affecting this, or it could be some compatibility issue btwn FCP 7, Snow Leopard, and this camera or AVCHD.
