  • Canon 7D video footage has 3 duplicated freeze frames during pan

    Hi Everyone,

For one of our feature documentary films, a portion of the video footage was shot with a Canon 7D.

When we were looking at the footage that was shot, we noticed that some of the video (especially panned shots), occasionally there are 3 duplicate freeze frames, which creates a jump cut affect.

Thank you for helping me understand:

    1) How many of you have experienced this issue?

    2) How we can resolve this issue on future film shoots

    3) Whether the new 2.0 firmware addresses the issue.

Thank you very much for your feedback and time.

Interesting. I haven’t noticed it on my 7D, but I just exported a video and while transcoding, it had about a 1 second freeze and then skipped. I don’t think this was the camera, since on my timeline it’s fine.

I wonder if anyone with a 5D Mk III is having these issues?

    Thanks for your response, Brett.

I converted the 7D video file to prores 422, then imported it in Final Cut Pro, and the 3 freeze frames in the pan were still there.

I have read in different forums that it has been an issue for other users.

And, it’s interesting that I had 3 freeze frames in the video clip, and the 5D user in the link above also had exactly 3 freeze frames.

From what I am reading, suggested reasons for the issue might be:

    1) If you use any auto settings at all on the camera (you reportedly should use all manual settings)

and 2) if your shutter speed is anything but double your frame rate (i.e., for 30 fps, use a shutter speed of 60).

I think that at times, there were some auto settings used, and the shutter speed used when the camera was on a crane was sometimes 125th of a second.

Is there anyone who can confirm that they have experienced any issues when using auto settings on the 7D?

    Thanks again for your thoughts.

    Hello.

I recently have been having the exact same issue, 3 freeze frames. I just shot a very important project and realized almost all of my shots have this issue. I have been using my 7D for over a year and never had the problem, though when shooting I usually have the shutter speed cranked for shallow DOF, 1.4. Shutter speed usually 200-800, depending on the shot.
However, I did not like this because I wanted my shutter double my frame rate (50), so I got a ND filter, and started shooting at 50. I believe this may have something to do with it considering I have never had this problem before.
Either way, this is really unfortunate because my project is ruined.
Let me know if you find any more info!

was cutting a concert i shot nearly a year ago on a 5D MarkIII, and found a line of 6 frozen frames. Was not in between files as i thought it might be. It was a rental camera, so i have no previous or posterous experience with this issue.

i can’t remember if i shot this in all-i or not, which might help. Anyway, will keep digging to see what i find

i guess nothing to be done now, but yeah, i experienced it.

SONYA7s (if you get one that works) knocks the balls off those cameras.
