Hi. I own a Canon GL2 and I’ve been using Vegas Pro 8.0c for a few years now. The two have worked together beautifully.

I recently bought a Canon 7D, expecting to get similar results (only better because it shoots HD) and I’m pulling out what little hair I have left on my head.

I shot some test clips with the 7D and transfered the .MOV files to my hard drive. But when I drop the clips into the Vegas timeline, the video preview is all black (the audio seems fine).

Am I missing a codec? Do I have to upgrade?

I am shooting primarily in HD 1920×1080, but I’ve tried every other size. Have also tried both 30fps and 24fps.

A few weeks ago, I upgraded from Vista to Win 7 64-bit, thinking this might help. I then installed Vegas Pro 8 64-bit version, instead of my original 32-bit version, thinking this would also help – it hasn’t.

The only program I’ve found that will even play the clip is Quicktime. So I upgraded to Quicktime Pro so that I can convert the files, but quite frankly, I’m getting totally lost as to what compression rate I should use and what file type would be best for editing in Vegas. So far, every file conversion I’ve tried on QT give me same or other problems on Vegas Pro 8.

My goal is to have decent HD quality video for web, that has an aspect ratio proportional to the native file – I’d like it to be somewhere around 720 wide.

    Can someone help me?

Somewhere between novice and expert, kinda like between idiot and savant.

It’s well known that updating QuickTime to anything newer than version 7.6.2 breaks the ability of Vegas Pro 8 to read .mov files.
Try uninstalling your current version and installing 7.6.2 which can be found on the Avid site.
If that doesn’t work, then do the upgrade to Vegas Pro 10 (only $139 until Nov. 30) as it handles DSLR camera files very easily.

your problem is Quicktime. So as far as I know ver 7.6.2 is the one that works with Vegas. uninstall Quicktime and download that version from the archives of the quicktime site and it should work. I just reinstalled a new machine and loaded the latest version of Quicktime and the same thing happened. I uninstalled and put in 7.6.2 and it works fine

    Thanks Mike and Joe.

I had given up trying to make it work a few weeks ago and found your forum yesterday and asked for your help. I had not worked on these files in nearly a month, and must have had an earlier version of QT than the one I currently have, which is 7.6.8. So before trying your advice, I tried one more time to work with the files and to my amazement, they worked!

I can see the video and do my editing, but the preview is extremely choppy, even when I reduce the preview to draft and half size, the image lags almost a second behind the audio. So I tried installing QT 7.6.2 like you recommended, and now Vegas didn’t recognize the files at all – I don’t even see the audio.

I reinstalled 7.6.8 and I’m back to choppy preview, but at least I can see the video.

I inquired about the upgrade offer of Vegas 10, but the $139 offer appears to be for US only – I’m north of the border.

Now that I can work with these files, any recommendations as the compression rate I should render these files to? I want HD quality video for web, the kind you see on Vimeo.com. If you could also provide tips on bit rates and aspect ratios, would be greatly appreciated.

Bernie, if by “north of the border” you mean Canada (Windsor, Ontario), I’m there too and I get the same price.
It is in US dollars but with the exchange rate being so good these days, it’s almost equal.
In case you missed it, here’s a link to the offer.
It’s good until the end of November and, IMO, it’s one of the best releases of Vegas to come along in a very long time so get it and save yourself a lot of headaches trying to edit your footage.
I’ve got some sample 5D, 7D and AVCHD files and they all play full frame full res on my 2GB. XP quad core.
