Canon 7D & FCP
Just purchased a Canon 7D and would like to ingest, cut and output via FCP Studio. Camera footage will originate @ 1080 24p, and 720 60p. For the high speed 60p I have used Cinetools to preview the footage – I’m not sure if this is rthe way to go for the best results – will the 60p require a different workflow. May I injest directly from the card or mov file?
Any workflow suggestions for highest quality finished images @ 24 and or 60P? I’m using FCP version 6.0.

Like the 5Dmk2 the 7D shoots H264 codec. This must be converted to an editing codec like ProRes (1920 x 1080 so same pixel aspect), before ingesting into FCP. Do not just drop the .mov files into FCP as it will play badly and need rendering.
Use compressor to do the batch conversion. You might also want to use Compressor to slo mo the 60fps down to 24 using frame controls. Now the big question – is the 24 frame mode actually 24 or is it 23.976? Canon has been driving this forum nuts with people trying to get the 5D footage to correct speed of 29.97 from the 30 native. I don’t know what they have done with regards 24fps, but I wait with baited breath.
At least Canon have corrected the audio sample rate to 48khz in the 7D. With the 5Dmk2, the audio had to be converted as well. Pity it seems to be auto gain.

Advanced movie mode with manual exposure control and selectable frame rates: 1920 x 1080 (Full HD): 30p (29.97) / 24p (23.976) / 25p, 1280 x 720 (HD): 60p (59.94) / 50p, 640 x 480 (SD): 60p (59.94) / 50p.

just shot some test footage
put it in Compressor
saved it
put it in FCP7
found ProRes 422 1920×1080HOWEVER Sequence settings has no 1920×1080
SHOULD I use CUSTOM
and what about PIXEL Aspect? -

We have 4 options to convert the Canon 7D movie clips to work properly on the Final Cut Timeline/Sequence.
– MPEG StreamClip
– QuickTime 7
– Compressor
– Canon’s plug-in EOS Movie Plugin-E1You have the Sequence Settings for 1080p (1920×1080). Just choose HDTV 1080i (16:9) on the Frame Size and Square pixel on the Pixel Aspect Ratio. Another way is to Drag&Drop the clip to the timeline and hit the Yes button to the Sequence match the clip settings, it’s really easy.
