Canon 60D to Log and Transfer to External Drive

You should seek out the Tapeless Work flow tutorial here on the cow.

First off-load the cards onto your comp. Back it up to at least 2 different drives if not 3. Doesn’t matter where or which drives.

When you L&T into FCP, your scratch drive should not be the OS drive.

Might need to hack the Log and Transfer plugin, unless Canon included the 60D. The left out the 550D and T2i (same camera), so I had to hack it.

Shane, how did you add the 60D? I have the 5D and 7D, that worked great, then I recently added the 60D and discovered the log and transfer didn’t work.

Shane, I’m sorry, I’m probably giving you a headache; I know you answered a similar question like this one on one of the last threads I posted.

Chris, my concern is this: the log and transfer plugin for the 60D recognizes the memory card i’m using and it lists all of the clips I am to use – if there is a way for it recognize the card with all the files in it, but then store those files on my external drive then I’ll be good. I’m assuming that’s what “scratch disk” means?

The functionality of the plugin is to format the clips correctly so they’re not H.264 – I wouldn’t want to throw them into an external drive then bring them into FCP because I would lose meta data on those clips, apparently; the plugin keeps all of the information together, so I’m asking if there is a way where to use the plugin first, Log and Transfer into FCP, and then save the clips and such (FCP files) on an external drive.

Fernando:

No, you do not want to log and transfer from the cards. Always backup your media to your hard drive first. I create a folder for my shoot, then subfolders for each card. Drag the entire card over. Then back it up again to another 2nd drive for safe keeping. Then you can use your log and transfer to access the files you copied to your drive.

It’s recommended to lock your cards before plugging them into your Mac. The Mac will write a code onto your card. I’ve never had a problem with this, but some cameras may have problems reading the card after being plugged into a Mac if the card is not locked. Of course then you have to remember to unlock it if you want to delete and reuse your card.
