    Hi folks,

I had one of those OMG moments when I was trying to drop some footage from a Canon 5D MkII into a Vegas Pro 9 timeline. The thing wasn’t running right at all – snatching and generally looking like hell.

I’ve been reading all the back-chat about this on the site – a lot of it seems to involve a lot of trans-coding and buying stuff. However I seem to have stumbled on a simple solution which works well without any problem.

Normally I set up projects as Progressive 25 fps. This is obviously a problem as the Canon is generating 30 fps. I’ve changed the project properties to 1920×1080 NTSC, (Upper field first – although I think the files off the Canon are Progressive aren’t they?) I pulled in the files, edited them then rendered the whole thing to a new track as AVi using the excellent 1080-60iYUV codec, as recommended by John F. in one of the archived discussions. This does make a pretty big file, but it’s free and it works.

For final (client) render I’ve used the 720-30P wmv template, using Quality VBR.

My project was a series of fairly fast engineering machine moves, and they’ve come out sharp and smooth.

Hope this helps someone. Let me know if I’m missing something obvious or if there’s a better way to set up the project files.
