  • Canon 5D MKII Video Files – What to convert to?

Posted by Ryan Baldwin on April 29, 2009 at 3:08 pm

I am completely new to video. I got my new Canon 5D MKII, shot some footage and now I have my copy of Final Cut Pro.

I’ve moved the .MOV files over from my CF Card to my HD and now I am trying to edit these files in FCP but I am getting very choppy playback – from what I’ve read I need to convert these files to something else?

What exactly do I need to convert these to (please be specific as I know there are a million different types)?

Basically I want to quickly edit this footage with basic edits and then put it on YouTube.

    Thanks,
    Ryan

Convert it to ProRes in Compressor.

Also, this question is asked and answered almost weekly on the forum. In the future, do a little research on your own first.

Thank you very much, and sorry for the redundancy but my question, specifically, is what ProRes do I convert it to? There are a lot of ProRes options.

    there’s only 2.

    ProRes & ProRes HQ

try both and make a decision. 🙂

No there isn’t… there is a ton and I just tried converting it to one of them and it made it all squashed together.

What is the wide screen option? 1920×1080 60i 48khz? What’s the best option? I am just using Export under my Browser in Final Cut… I don’t know how to use Compressor?

    no, there is only 2…

you would NEVER use any other resolution & frame rate setting than the resolution and frame rate
of your video. your ONLY resolution option is therefore 1920×1080, and possibly 29.97 for the framerate, that one you have to figure out.

that leaves only 2 ProRes Codec options…..

Just keep the frame size and frame rate the same as your existing footage. Then convert to either ProRes SQ or ProRes HQ.

Depending on where you’re going to and the delivery mechanism you may not want to keep the original frame rate. Apparently this camera like the other Canon still/video cameras shoots 30fps rather than the video standard 29.97fps.

    All the best,

In that case, the wouldn’t be any harm in choosing 29.97 when converting it in compressor.

Yeah, unless he’s going for web delivery only, in which he might want to stay in 30fps. There never seem to be good answers with this camera.

    All the best,

If you don’t know how to use the applications, there is a beginners forum for just that purpose. Check it out.
