Canon 5D Mark III – Handling of spanned clips

I don’t have enough mkIII footage to test but I could only assume no. Since they’re straight ahead MOV files with no other “hints” like XDCAM or P2 might have with folder structure, they should come in as single files you’ll need to butt-up manually.

What apps do most use to merge up the files?

You’d still have to review footage. From what I recall, there will be no designator in the file name to say “hey this is part 2!” it’ll just be the next numbered clip.

A few things 1) live with it, 2) you could just use nested timelines in Premiere, similar to a merged clip, 3) You could butt them up in Premiere and export the full file to a intermediate codec like ProRes or DNxHD, or 4) you could try and literally join the files which may lead to all kinds of unforeseeable issues – https://superuser.com/questions/133413/joining-h264-without-re-encoding

I would probably stick with #1. It’s easy if you keep editing notes, it’s friendly if you have to use EDL/XML exports, and it requires not additional ingest/processing time.
