Canon 5D 1080p to betacam SD downconvert via IoHD?
I shot some BTS footage for a WB shoot and was under the impression I would deliver a HDD with the dumped H.264s from the camera. Unfortunately, I was slapped with a betacam request and now want to see if my IoHD can do what I think it should.
I have FCP 6 which I hear doesn’t handle H.264s all that well and if getting FCP 7 is the simple answer, then I am all for it. What I am trying to avoid is ridiculous render times / compressor conversion times.
I set up a sequence to auto-configure by dragging a clip into the timeline and then adding the rest of the clips into the timeline. the settings came out to be a 1920 x 1080 frame size which is correct. the footage with the 5D Mark II comes out 30fps which is interesting but fine. I then went to the AJA IoHD control panel and chose the secondary analog out which was set to 525i29.97. I went to playback and it didn’t play but a frame. I checked to make sure external video was set to “all frames” and my video output was AJA IoHD 525i29.97 8-Bit (720×486) and all seemed okay.
I have never downconverted like this before but would love for someone to say “hey, do it this way ’cause x, y, and z haven’t been set”. I am still trying to work with the client to just take the HDD so they can do what they want with the footage but I want to be able to offer this service if at all possible.

Hi Dave,
I don’t think the AJA will manage that.Transcode your H264 to Prores, keeping all the setting (Size, time-base,..).
Conform your Proresp30 to p29’98 in CinemaTools.

That’s what I figured. Nothing ever has the solutions you want it to — although it’s a very round-about thing I was trying to do. I appreciate your help!

Hi parker,
To do this job you need a completely different kind of hardware: The famous Teranex or something similar. Video cards (AJA, BM, Matrox) do not manage changes in time base.
