Cannot scrub smoothly and cannot easily move timeline and bin windows
Posted by Dan Schneider on March 17, 2012 at 8:26 pmI’m having a bizarre problem in Avid Media Composer where I cannot scrub smoothly in the timeline, and also cannot move the windows smoothly either. All the windows: such as the timeline, and all my bins, will only move approximately 5 pixels in any direction I try to drag them, and then will stay there until I try to move them again. Does anyone here know what could be causing this?

March 17, 2012 at 8:29 pmI notice that the problem seems to come and go when I alt-tab out of the application and then when I come back, it works fine again for about 5 seconds, until I play something, and then it stops working again.

March 17, 2012 at 11:09 pmSounds like something is wrong on your machine.
Obvious questions: reboot? Did you upgrade windows at all? Anti-virus stuff?
How about the windows paging file? Is there a large page file?Best,

March 17, 2012 at 11:49 pmThis is on a fresh install of both Windows 7 and Avid. I literally installed them both on the same day a couple of days ago. I have AVG installed, and that’s it. I have 6GB RAM, and so by default Windows gives me a paging file of also 6GB. I’ve also rebooted multiple times, to no avail.

March 18, 2012 at 2:42 amWhat kind of mouse or pointing device do you have? Does it Have special drivers installed?

March 18, 2012 at 3:39 amIt’s just a regular USB mouse. Nothing special. I can’t imagine it being the mouse itself.

March 18, 2012 at 3:47 amJust a thought. It seems like odd pointer behavior. Scrolling and moving windows. You didn’t say you had any playback or general performance issues. In the past I’ve had symptoms similar to this be due to a faulty tablet.

March 18, 2012 at 4:24 amSame thing could’ve happened with a mouse. Or rather the USB port. If you feel like it try another mouse on another port. Thats my only thought as to what could be causing this.

March 19, 2012 at 2:24 pmThe thing is that it doesn’t happen in other applications at all. Also, it’s not the mouse that isn’t smooth. The mouse moves freely, it’s the windows that stop moving while being dragged by the mouse.

March 20, 2012 at 3:49 amI’ve found out some more information, including the fact that the same problem happens in Adobe After Effects, but not Adobe Premiere. I’m thinking it may have to do with my graphics card or its drivers, but I can’t be sure. In any case, my graphics card is the NVIDIA GTX 465.
