  • Cannon 5D mark III and FCP 7- log and transfer problem

Posted by Pratul Gaikwad on April 11, 2013 at 5:35 am

I am trying to log and transfer 5D III footage in FCP 7 below are technical details-

Macbook Pro , Mac osX 10.6.8
    FCP 7.4
using latest plugin -EOS MOVIE Plugin-E1 for Final Cut Pro 1.4

I am able to inport the files in log and transfer window and files starts transferring but there are no proress files in logging bin.

Output files are not getting created in logging bin.

Cannon footage is shot at 23.98 FPS.

    What is the problem?

Alternate question, what if I dont want to use ‘log and transfer’ and still want to convert the files in proress keeping their timcode intact?

The Canon Mark III is incompatible with FCP’s Log and Transfer. Canon tweaked something, making the EOS plugin not work for that model. Well, mainly because FCP 7 was discontinued before that camera came out, so they didn’t bother investing in EOL software.

You’ll have to use alternate means of transcoding:

    Compressor
    MPEG STREAMCLIP
    Magic Bullet Grinder
    5DtoRGB

Grinder might keep the timecode intact…not sure.

Thanks shane .I was hoping for your reply only 🙂

Well I tried compressor preset to convert the files in prosess it gave me below issue.
Timecode that comes out after compressor is 1frame ahead.
    For e.g :
if the original timecode is – 00:11:15:04 to 00:12:10:02
    compressor timecodd is – 00:11:15:05 to 00:12:10:03

You see the total duration is same, its just that the actual timecode gets shifted by one frame.

Do mind that my original footage is shot on 23.98FPS, is this a problem?

I have the Mark III. There was an update for the L&T plugin from Canon for FCP7. I have it, and it’s very buggy. You are much better off getting 5DtoRGB Batch and using it to convert. It was the best decision I made.

    thank you very much Warren

I did some testing with ‘5DtoRGB lite’ and it works great.

I am off to purchase ‘5DtoRGB batch’

So the final verdict is- Cannon has not released any updates from Mark3 to work on FCP 7. In order to work with Mark3 files on FCP7, you need to have ‘5dtoRGB’

    Thanks for your inputs guys.

Canon did release an update. It’s just buggy. I get skipped frames when I use it and it is very slow. I use 5DtoRGB Batch because it is 64bit multi-threaded aware and very fast!
