Can you import an AVI file and maintain the original source timecode?
I need to be able to import AVI files captured in Premiere Pro 2 (Windows) using the Microsoft DV codec and maintain their original source timecodes. Is this actually possible?
Simply importing the AVIs into FCP 5.1.4 is easy, I’ve tried it and they work fine without needing to render… the problem is that they don’t bring their source timecodes with them. I was under the (possibly erroneous) impression that the timecode was an integral part of the AVI, but if it is, it’s not currently being picked up by FCP.
Any suggestions gratefully appreciated!

The the original source tapes and recapture with FCP.

Sorry, I should have made my circumstances clearer. I want to be able to capture the footage on the Premiere Pros at work, then take the AVIs away on a portable hard drive and do the edit at home on my FCP. I need the original source timecodes for reconforming from the original DigiBeta tapes back at work – we don’t broadcast from DV-quality footage.
I cannot afford a Sony J30 at home, and the DigiBeta tapes are not allowed out of the building anyway.
So can anyone fill me in on the technicalities of timecode and AVI files? Is what I’m trying to do even possible, or is the timecode information stored separately from the AVIs?
