can you capture ProRes on a mac with a blackmagic or aja card?
Just searched the threads and don’t seem to see a definitive answer.
I want the ability to capture ProRes in premiere pro cs 5.5
with my aja or black magic capture card.all I see is uncompressed 8 or 10-bit and a few other options but
prores not listed.I do have final cut pro 7 installed on these machines so
the prores encoder/decoder is installed.and one last thing, anyone know why my export, tape option
is grayed out?need to run some edit to digibeta / beta tests.

someone on a post here said you could capture prores, but unless I’m missing something, it cannot be done within premiere.
both my bmd and aja cards are only offering uncompressed options.
hopefully adobe will address this in cs 6.
I should not have to use another separate app to capture tapes.
I know tapeless is the now and future, but some of us still have clients that need it. -
Premiere can’t do it. It doesn’t have the license for ProRes. You have to use the capture tool provided by AJA or BMD, and FCP will have to be installed (to have access to the codec).

I guess aja and bmd can’t just slip the option in their since they provide the interface.

The “option” would be to license the ProRes codec from Apple. Dunno how expensive it is. But not something they are doing at this time.
THIS is why Adobe needs it’s own codec. Or…hmmm…DNxHD encoding is free from Avid. But I don’t think you can capture to it with AJA or BMD and PPro…in fact, I’m sure you can’t.

You can get all of the the ProRes Codecs with Motion 5 from the Mac App store. Motion is $49.95. Requires 10.6.8 or above.

Thanks Jim, but I have final cut studio 3 installed.
I have the codecs.
they just won’t come up as codec options under the black magic or aja capture utilities in premiere.

You cannot capture as ProRes in Premiere. YOu will have to use the AJA or BMD capture tools.

I understand CS5.5 cannot capture to ProRes but what about playback of ProRes files in a sequences designed for one of those cards?
I am ok with using an external app to capture but being able to actually edit with the card would be very important.
