I just got back from a European vacation where I shot 3 hours of video tape. After capturing the video and starting to edit it I noticed that all 3 tapes have a periodic scratching sound on the left channel. It is usually heard when I am talking as I record. My camera is a Sony PC110 and has a typical screen that swivels out on the side. The result is that when I hold it and film I am talking directly down into the microphone which is on the top of the camera. It is usually during those times where I am talking loudly while I am filming that there is a crackling or scratching/popping sound that come through on the left channel. The weird thing is that I’ve checked tapes shot before and after the trip and the sound isn’t there. It would be one thing if it was on just one of the trip tapes and I’d chalk it up to bad tape or something…but for it to be on all three and none before and after the trip is strange. I never let the tape get hot or wet. The only thing I can think of that is different for these three tapes is the xray. We went on 10 flights and about 6 xraying events. Any ideas?

Unlikely, I go through Xray’s once or twice a week (local and international) and have never suffered any damage to tapes.
If it’s not a tape defect it could be any magnetic field you encountered on the trip, seen or unseen.
