Can Vegas velocity go any faster?
Posted by Melissa Smith on July 12, 2009 at 4:12 pmI figure this will be easy to answer. Anyone who has windows movie maker knows about the ‘speed up double’ feature and if you click that 6 times it makes the clips REALLY fast. Can this be done in Vegas? Vegas appears to only go so fast…

July 12, 2009 at 5:49 pmYou can get up to a 12X speed increase.
Step #1: Place your cursor at the end of the clip, hold down the Ctrl key (you’ll now see a ~ under it) and drag it backwards for a 4X increase.
This can also be done by right-clicking the clip, selecting Properties and changing the Playback rate to 4.000.Step #2: Insert a Velocity envelope (only available in the Pro version) and set it to the maximum (300%) for a 3X increase.
Note: you’ll need to shorten the clip when you do this or you’ll see it repeating itself 3 times. Look at the top of the timeline for the inverted V symbol and drag the clip backwards to the first one.Together this gives you a 12X increase.
If you need it to go even faster, render it, import it and repeat either or both steps. -

July 13, 2009 at 3:27 amThanks 🙂 so now I know it’s pretty much impossible to make the speed super fast manually. Oh well, I’ll have to re-import it.

Actually, there is no need to render. Open a new project and drop in the clip and change the playback rate to 4.000 and add a velocity envelope at 300% as Mike said to get 12x. Now save this veg file and drop it back into your original project as a nested veg file and change the playback of this new event to 4.000 and velocity envelope to 300% to get 24x. Not fast enough? Nest that in another project and get 36x, etc.

July 13, 2009 at 5:02 pmSince I am currently at my work, I can not try this tric now. But does it really give an speed enhancement of 24 times? I would expect that the new speed is going to be 144 times.

Funny how that math stuff works but I believe you are correct. 2 x 12 is 24 so 12 x 12 is 144. Wow… that’s pretty fast! 😉 (even if I’m slow)

May 9, 2012 at 8:24 amHi John, I am not what you would call a professional or even close, but I have been using Vegas since the early years for personal projects, and this is the first I have ever heard of this…if it wouldn’t be to much of a problem for you, could you tell me step by step how this is done? This could start saving me a lot of time!
