Can MacBook Pro handle 250 hours of ProRes Footage to edit
I have been away of from FCP these days and have some questions.
I have a friend who has the footage of 250 hours of 1080p footage which she is going to convert to ProRes, which will be 16TB.she has a macbook pro 13 inch late 2011 model with 2.8GH dual core I7.

i forgot to ask about the memory but if needed she can have the maximum 8GB RAM installed.She is concerned that her Macbook Pro is powerful enough to edit 16TB materials. she has FCP 7 but she could use FCP X instead. (I am recommending her to switch to X since 7 is fading out.) This will be 90 min. to 2 hour documentary with mostly one video layer, cut and dissolve only, not so much effect.
She will be using thunderbolt drives daisy chained if possible.
do you think it is editable set up?
which system is better to edit between fcp 7 or X from different perspectives?if it is bad idea, what would you recommend?

As long as you can connect the 16TB drive worth of footage to the latpop, it will do fine.
BTW, 250 hours of ProRes 422 is 19TB…so you need 22-23 TB of storage for that. If you go ProRes LT, then it is 13.4TB…and a 16TB drive is right. Just FYI

And they should use whatever NLE they feel comfortable using. FCP 7 still works, and will still get the job done. Depends if they have the time/need/want/desire to learn a whole new editing app too. The only thing similar about the two apps is they are made by Apple, and convert footage to ProRes.

thank you for your response, Shane. Even though FCP X has a wacky interface, do you think it would be better for that fact it will run smoother since it is 64bit application or doesn’t make that difference since the editing will be simple cut and dissolve only?

I cannot comment about FCX vs FCP, as I haven’t used FCX that much. I tried it for 4 days and just couldn’t grasp it. So to me, no, FCP 7, that I know very well, would be smoother. But others who “get” FCX swear by it.

What is the codec of the original footage? I would edit the native footage (unless it’s H264 – where you need to convert) in a Prores timeline to save space if possible.

hi jon,
my friend said it is AVCHD MTS file. it would be great if fcp 7 or x can edit it natively but my understanding is that it is not good idea. what do you think?

Myself I would look at FCPX – especially if its a simple cut – or Premiere and edit AVCHD natively…16-20 TB is a massive amount of storage and maybe a budget constraint.
You may want to look into running another monitor for the 13″ – the 13″ will be annoying to cut on. There maybe problems with daisy chaining the monitor with one thunderbolt port attached to storage.

Also consider what is needed after the edit when considering FCPX. Do you need to export OMF’s for audio sweetening? Stick with FCP7.
